When you unfollow someone on Instagram, their account is removed from your Following list. Instagram does not notify them. But unfollowing only changes your side of the relationship: if they already follow you, they remain in your Followers list.

Here’s what changes, what stays the same, and how to choose between muting, unfollowing, and managing your followers.

What Changes When You Unfollow Someone?

Unfollowing ends your follow relationship with that account:

Their account is removed from your Following list.
You no longer follow them.
Unfollowing does not block them or remove them from your Followers list.

Instagram’s unfollow instructions explain how to unfollow someone from their profile and confirm that they won’t be notified.

Will They Know You Unfollowed Them?

Instagram doesn’t send someone a notification when you unfollow them. They may still notice if they check their followers list and see that your account is no longer there.

In short: they won’t receive a direct notification, but they could discover the change on their own.

What If One of You Has a Private Account?

Privacy settings affect who can see posts; unfollowing is not the same as blocking.

If their account is private: After you unfollow them, you’re no longer an approved follower. To see their private posts again, you’ll need to send another follow request and have it approved.
If your account is private and they already follow you: Unfollowing them does not automatically remove them from your Followers list.
If your account is public: Unfollowing someone does not make your posts private. Instagram says posts from public accounts can be seen by anyone on Instagram, while posts from private accounts are limited to approved followers. See Who Can See Your Instagram Posts.

Instagram’s Help Center says private accounts can remove people from their followers list. That’s a separate action from unfollowing. If you want to manage who can see your content, review Instagram’s instructions for removing a follower and blocking someone.

Mute, Unfollow, or Remove a Follower?

Choose based on what you want to change:

Instagram treats muting someone, unfollowing, and removing a follower as separate actions.

How to Choose

Decide what you want to change. If you just want to see less of someone’s content, consider muting them. If you no longer want to follow their account, unfollow them.
Check their privacy setting. If their account is private, unfollowing means you’ll no longer be an approved follower. You’ll need approval again to see their private posts.
Manage the other side of the relationship separately. Unfollowing someone does not remove them from your Followers list. Instagram’s Help Center says private accounts can remove followers. If you need to limit someone’s access to a public account, review Instagram’s guidance on blocking.
Use Instagram’s in-app controls. Go to the person’s profile, tap Following, select Unfollow, and confirm. Button labels may vary as Instagram updates its interface.

Checking Your Following List: Current Status vs. Recent Changes

If you’re reviewing your following list, distinguish between a current relationship status and a recent change:

Don’t Follow You Back refers to accounts you follow that don’t currently follow you back. That status alone doesn’t prove they recently unfollowed you.
Mutual refers to accounts that currently follow you and are followed by you.
Recent Unfollowers is a report category related to recent follow changes. Which records are available depends on the current report and its status.

The Who Unfollow You website currently describes reports for public Instagram accounts and says an Instagram login isn’t required. Check the site’s current eligibility and report details before relying on a result. Don’t treat a current non-mutual relationship as proof of a recent unfollow, or infer someone’s reasons from a change in follow status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Instagram notify someone when I unfollow them?

No. Instagram’s Help Center says people aren’t notified when you unfollow them.

Will they still follow me after I unfollow them?

If they were already following you, unfollowing them does not automatically remove them from your Followers list. It changes only your side of the follow relationship.

Can I still see someone’s posts after I unfollow them?

It depends on their privacy setting. Posts from public accounts can be seen by anyone on Instagram. Posts from private accounts are limited to approved followers. If you unfollow a private account, you’ll need approval again to see its private posts.

Is muting the same as unfollowing?

No. Muting reduces the content you see from someone while keeping the follow relationship. Unfollowing ends your follow relationship with their account.
